Transgender documentarian Sam Feder's newest film "Increased Examination" offers a powerful two-part viewpoint – both an intimate portrait of a leading transgender activist and a critical analysis of journalistic coverage about trans existence.

Judicial Struggle at the Supreme Court

The film documents ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he prepares for legal presentations in the important Supreme Court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle happened in late 2024, with the court ultimately ruling in support of the state's argument, effectively allowing bans on treatment for trans minors to stay in place across numerous US states.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, stated Feder during a discussion. Meanwhile, my previous film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was quite rushed. Our purpose was to stimulate conversation so people would know more about the case.

Human Story Amid Political Struggle

While Feder provides a extensive critique of how prominent news organizations have disseminated transphobic narratives, the film's primary contribution may be its captivating portrayal of Strangio. Usually a cautious attorney in media settings, Strangio shows his authenticity throughout the documentary.

That was a significant challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a filmmaker that I had worked hard to keep private, explained Strangio. Sam told me he wanted younger people to know that we tried, to see what was done in defense of these fights for our material survival.

Varied Perspectives in the Movement

To strengthen Strangio's account, Feder features numerous transgender voices, including prominent leaders from journalism and the arts. This film also includes perspectives from cisgender advocates who examine how established media outlets have added to damaging coverage of trans people.

The experience of transgender youth central to the legal case is illustrated through a remarkable young activist named Mila. Viewers observe her advocating for her fellow students at a educational meeting, with later scenes showing her speaking for trans rights outside the highest court.

Personal Scenes Beyond the Legal Battle

This film also features poignant moments where Feder moves beyond the ongoing political battle, such as footage of Strangio vacationing in Italy and getting a tattoo featuring lines from civil rights leader Pauli Murray's poem "Prediction."

This ink sequence is one of my most cherished sections in the movie, shared Strangio. Getting inked is practically like a reflective process for me, to be fully present in my body and to view it as a vehicle for things that are meaningful to me.

Physical Autonomy and Portrayal

The filmmaker's focus to lovingly showing Strangio adding to his tattoo collection highlights that this documentary is primarily about transgender physical selves – not only those of youth who experience restriction of their right to live genuinely in their own bodies, but also the bodies of the many subjects who are featured in the documentary.

I create films with a message, and part of that is choosing people who are outstanding and eloquent enough to sustain the camera, explained Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my reply is whatever makes you feel confident. That is important to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our image.

Legacy and Optimism

A key factor that makes Feder's documentaries shine is his clear skill for making his transgender interviewees feel at ease, seen and appreciated. This approach creates genuine connection between Feder and Strangio, allowing the director to achieve his goal of showing Strangio as a multifaceted person and leaving a document for future generations of how resiliently he and fellow activists have campaigned for trans liberties.

I don't want people to find themselves in a situation of constant discouragement because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I aim to be in a practice of using the law to lessen harm, but not to make it some type of pathway for our liberatory potential. The government is not going to be the reflection through which we perceive ourselves. Our community are that mirror, and it's very vital that we persist having that dialogue together with conversations about fighting back these regulations and procedures.
