Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election with "immediate effect".

He was set to be among three contenders standing for Ireland's head of state, together with Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Yet, Sunday night he said in a statement that he "erred inconsistent with his values and the standards he upholds."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I've chosen to exit the presidential race right away and return to the arms of my family," he stated in his announcement.

Additional details to come.
