Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Win
The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the champions a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
